The Manhattan URI Update

To continue the story written about in our previous posting about the recent reports about the URI and possible Canine Influenza (dog flu) case(s) in Manhattan (see here), the dog suffering from pneumonia, possibly the dog flu, and/or other URI (upper respiratory infections) is recovering; however, he is still highly contagious. At the same veterinary office, they are suspecting that a puppy may have caught a URI from this dog. Despite this highly contagious dog is being kept in an isolation room, URIs like pneumonia and the dog flu are so contagious that it is not implausible for the puppy to have caught these diseases.

If your dog is highly social and/or goes to public places often (e.g. dog parks/runs), I would recommend being cautious and having your dog vaccinated, if he/she was not already.

The dog flu and pneumonia in dogs is not transferable to humans.

Signs of a URI include:

- Coughing

- Sneezing

- Nasal discharge

- Wheezing

- Gagging

- Difficult/labored breaths

- Increased lethargy

If you notice some of these signs, especially increased coughing, sneezing, and/or nasal discharge, contact your Veterinarian.

If you have reports of URIs in NYC, please report them to Dog Blog NYC, so we can help protect other dogs. Thank you.

NOTE:

These reports are gathered directly from our inside sources in Vet Clinics and Hospitals as well as from direct reports from dog owners in NYC. Data / reports used for this posting was not from government agencies such as the CDC (Center for Disease Control) or the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).
